Electricians: common questions
Q.01I’m selling my house. Do I need an electrical CoC?
In South Africa the seller usually has to provide a valid electrical CoC. Your estate agent or conveyancer can confirm exactly what’s needed for your sale. Pick “quote only” or “this week” in your request.
Q.02The whole street is off. Should I call an electrician?
Probably not. If the neighbours are off too, it’s likely the City or Eskom. Check for load-shedding or report the outage to them. Call an electrician if it’s only your property.
Q.03My earth leakage keeps tripping. Is it dangerous?
It’s doing its job: cutting power when it detects a fault. Unplug appliances one by one to see if one is the cause. If it keeps tripping, get an electrician to find the fault.
Q.04Will I pay a call-out fee?
Many electricians charge one, especially after hours. They’ll tell you their rates when they contact you.
