Solar installers: common questions
Q.01Do I need to register my solar system?
In Cape Town, systems connected to the grid need to be registered with the City as small-scale embedded generation (SSEG). Other municipalities have their own rules. A good installer will explain what applies to you and help with the paperwork.
Q.02How big a system do I need?
It depends on what you want to run and when. Backup for lights and Wi-Fi is very different from running a pool pump and geyser. The installer will work it out with you, usually from your bills.
Q.03Can I start with just an inverter and battery?
Yes. Many people start with backup power and add panels later. Mention it in your request so installers can plan for it.
Q.04Should I get more than one quote?
For a big purchase like solar, comparing two or three quotes is sensible. Choose “quote only” and we’ll try to connect you with more than one installer.
